Al Maher's on a Roll

       The weekend racing was of excellent quality with the Caulfield meeting full of promising horses and plenty of other interesting results across the rest of the country. The listed Glasshouse Handicap over 1400m at Caloundra was won by Victorian blueblood, Jamaican Rain. While the Al Maher's had their roller skates on today with success in Victoria and South Australia for talented gallopers.
  • Masculino -- The opening event at Caulfield saw the in form Mick Price gelding Masculino continue on his winning way. The Smart Missile galloper was ridden by Zac Spain who stated that this fellow is airborn at the moment and thanked Mick for the opportunity to ride him.

  • Al Passem and Al Maher -- Later in the day there was a epic fighting win by the recently gelded, Al Maher galloper Al Passem who set up a really solid pace and battled on strongly, to win. The first of a winning double for trainer Ken Keys and a super ride by young Ben Thompson. 
  •  Morphetville and Al Maher -- We saw another of the breed put in a super effort. When Rat With Goldtooth sat three and four wide the 1600m trip for jockey Justin Potter then exploded away on turning, for an easy win. The 4 year old mare is trained by Paul Preusker and after a run of seconds has now hit form.
  • Rillito -- The heavily backed Street Cry mare, Rillito was ultra impressive in winning again over 1200m at Caulfield. The Cummings trained and Craig Williams ridden galloper came in for heavy support over night and didnt let her supporters down. She is out of the commands mare,Unswerving and won with plenty in hand for the Godolphin team. She is a serious Spring contender.  
  • Jamaican Rain and the Sunshine Coast -- It was an easy win for the Manhattan Rain mare, Jamaican Rain and some spring riches could be in trainer Brian Laming''s thoughts after she demolished the field in The Glasshouse Handicap. She loves the wet tracks. She really has found some good form this time in. Being out the Redoutes Choice mare, Heriz sees some close in breeding here through blue hen, Shantha's Choice.  Some luck finally for the Hinchinbrook gelding, Bluebrook in the benchmark 75 with a good ride by James Orman. Trainer Kelly Schweida said "He has been very unlucky lately and this was a strong win today . The 1600m of the Grafton Guineas on July 12th could suit ".
  • Sebring and Asterius -- Another Sebring/ Waller successful combo saw Asterius come storming down the centre of the track with Brenton Avdulla riding the grey Sebring gelding home in the benchmark 80 for three year olds, over 1500m. In the listed Winter Cup we finally saw Harpers Choice break through after a long run of outs. Brenton Avdulla led all the way over the 2400m on the heavy track with him and although tiring late, saw it out. The Street Cry gelding had promised so much as a three year old but failed to deliver. 
  •   Clayton Douglas and Strategic Maneuvre -- A double at the Casterton meeting for up and coming jockey, Clayton Douglas. He scored early on the card with Famosa for Shane Nichols, in the maiden. While later in the day he got up on the Strategic Maneuvre gelding, Snippy Strategic giving that stallion a race to race double, with a well deserved win to Canny Moves in the next over 1400m ridden by Declan Bates. The 4 year old gelding is out of the Canny Lad mare, Nous. 
  • Winning Stallions -- There were multiple wins for the High Chaparral's with Jamie Kah giving the grey gelding, Silvera a peach of a ride, to get the chocolates for Tony Mcevoy. While Super Suave won over 1200m on the Sunny Coast on the heavy. The Written Tycoon mare, Wenner was well backed at Caulfield and fought hard to the line for Linda Meach to gain victory. While Shogun Son made it a double for the breed witha win at Caloundra for Jim Byrne and Kelly Schweida. And the Hard Spuns as well with Ashlor in the last carrying 63kgs to win with Jamie Mott in the saddle and Tornado Gal winning at Rosehill for the in form, Jay Ford.  
  • Horses to Follow -- Mville - Good Journey gelding Mussoorie Magic. The Golden Snake mare Star Patriot over 2000m or further.  
  • Jockeys in form -- Jay Ford, Brenton Avdulla, Clayton Douglas, Jamie Kah.

Tiara for Prompt Response

      This weekend saw the final group one of the season with victory going to the Waterhouse/Bott mare Prompt Response. While Nature Strip put his name forward for an Everest nomination. On the breeding side there were more wins for the Snitzel and So You Think clans and trebles for Lope De Vega and Hinchinbrook family. 

Nature Strip -- This son of  Nicconi has had plenty of wraps on him and earlier this year, switched stables, to the strong, Darren Weir team. Today, they got their rewards quickly as he recorded a time, only .11 seconds outside the course record. He was unextended by jockey Damian Lane, in the easy win, down the straight at Flemington and there is every possibility he will target the 13 million dollar Everest in October.

Snitzel and Lope De Vega -- It was good to see Miles of Krishan salute on Saturday. She has always been a talented Snitzel mare but draws wide so often, which tends to take the sting, out of her finish. Young Fred Kersley just got enough out of her, to secure victory, for the Hayes/Dabernig team. Later in the day, in the Provincial Plate, it was a Snitzel quinella and both the winner Silentz and runner up Another Coldie are trained by Darren Weir. The later is another that does'nt have the best of luck with draws and I can see another victory, for the gelding, shortly. A great ride by Dean Yendal on the winner. He just sat on the back of his stablemate and when he sprinted, that was the end of the race. The Lope De Vega three year old filly, Remember the Name, scored another victory for Damien Oliver and Danny O'brien at headquarters. While another of the breed was successful in the Sunshine State with the group 3 2200m Tatts Cup going to Divine Unicorn. Ridden by veteran jockey Jim Byrne he defeated, last weeks Ipswich Cup winner, Tradesman.   

So You Think -- We had a heavy track at Randwick for saturdays racing and of note, was a double, by So You Think progeny. The High Chaparral stallion's sons and daughters are quite capable in the wet and I notice they do go alright first and especially second up ! A good ride and plenty of faith by jockey, Kathy O'hara secured a win for You Make Me Smile in the BM 80 for 3yo's. He was a $10,000 dollar purchase for the Rockhampton Jockey Club and has now won $112,000 in prizemoney. While in the Winter Dash over 1200m, I Thought So won with a bit in hand from the wet track specialist Jungle Edge who carried an extra 6.5 kgs which probably was the telling factor. Glyn Schofield and the Snowden team have had a few problems with this stable favorite but hopefully he has now turned the corner.

Tatts Tiara and Hinchinbrook -- Prompt Response won the last of the group ones for the Australian racing season, The Tatts Tiara at Doomben over 1350m. The daughter of the ill fated,blueblood stallion,  Beneteau who was by the full sister to Alinghi, Slice of Paradise and by Australias super stallion, Redoutes Choice. It was a great ride from Blake Shinn who kicked the mare clear on straightening to gain another group one for the Waterhouse/Bott stable. Another win yesterday for Blake was in the Class 6 Plate over 1350m when the Hinchinbrook mare Manaya got up to win. While in the W.J.Healy group 3 we saw victory go to Spright, yet another Hinchinbrook mare. The breed are like the Sebrings, when the off season comes, they come out to play and that was the case in Queensland yesterday.

A Commanding Miss Leonidas


    The highlights of Saturdays racing were the brilliant win by the I Am Invincible filly, Miss Leonidas, at the Valley. The win of Tradesman in the listed Ipswich Cup for Dean Yendall and Darren Weir.The continuing record breaking run of Chris Waller and his Sebring's. While on the breeding side of the coin revealed the continued presence of Redoutes Choice and Command's broodmares in the winners circle, with their progeny.

Miss Leonidas -- The I Am Invincible filly exploded away from her opposition over the Moonee Valley 1000m for the Dwayne Dunn/ Henry Dwyer combination. She is a real flying machine this filly.


 Redoutes Choice and Commands -- The continued success of the broodmares of these two prominent stallions showed up across Australia on the weekend, with wins, at the Valley, Rosehill,Morphetville and Wodonga. In the final event at the Valley, the So You Think colt, Usain Bowler and jockey Mick Dee came with a well timed run, saluting, for the John Saddler stable, in the 1200m 3yo Vobis race. She is out the Redoutes Choice mare, Eileen. While at Rosehill, Flow, a Street Cry gelding for the Cummings stable recorded a well deserved victory in the BM 95 race. He is from the Redoutes mare, Glissade. The opening race in Adelaide was won by Assertive Play in strong fashion. She is a two year old filly from another, Redoutes mare, Aussie Crawl by a stallion standing in South Australia by the name of Akeed Mcfeed. In the country at Wodonga a short price Pierro colt called Jenkins broke his maiden status.
Commands camp had a win in the two year old race at the Ipswich carnival, with a colt from his daughter Jezzamine by Jet Spur, called Unconditional. While at Kembla another two year old colt, Unwise won his maiden, as well. He is by Lonrho from the Commands mare, Indiscretions and is trained by James Cummings. In the 2000m Kensei Hcp at Rosehill another Waller/Sebring success as Black'nGold got home for jockey Brenton Avdulla. The gelding is out of the Commands mare, Fools Gold.
Waller/ Sebring -- This combination is a potent one with the win by Black'n'Gold and at Kembla with Asterius in the 1400m class 1 ridden by Chad Lever.The amount of winners over the past few weeks recorded by these two together is astounding. Chris has the key to the Sebrings.
Tradesman -- In the Ipswich Cup, the strong Darren Weir camp was present with Tradesman and Dean Yendall, in the saddle. After sitting three wide the trip the Victorian got home by a pimple after an almighty tussle with First Crush, up the straight . Darren Weir gave the ride a one out of ten but said the horse was a fighter. This added another $175,000 to the prizemoney of the Trade Fair gelding. The stallion stands in Western Australia.

    Additional winners worth taking note of are the win by the Not A Single Doubt gelding, Single Note, at the Valley. A decisive win and this gelding always takes a few runs to get momentum another win could easily follow. The win of the I Am Invincible mare, Of The Day in the class 6 plate at Ipswich. The progeny of the South American, stallion Host in the country on wet tracks. During the week there were a few and at Wodonga saturday in the heavy saw Georgia's Host successful in the three year old fillies race. While at Rosehill the four year old mare Lachila Bella won the BM 75 over 1500m, ridden by Rachel King.

August Autumn Sun

 We may be in the middle of winter and the off season but there were plenty of talented gallopers around, on the weekend . None more so, than 'The Autumn Sun' and 'The August' who are very promising and future wins are assured, for both these colts. While Santa Ana Lane continued his new found, winning ways, making it three group ones, in the Stradbroke.  

Santa Ana Lane and Lope De Vega -- It was another group one for the revitalized Santa Ana Lane. The Lope De Vega gelding has now put three group ones on his resume in the past year and trainer Anthony Freedman says it was a visit and a win in the Wagga Town Plate where he found his mojo. The gaps opened up today for jockey Ben Melham in the straight and the Stradbroke was all over in a 100 metres. He now joins Shoals,Happy Clapper and Trapeze Artist in equal second behind Winx for the most group ones this season. In the Bruce Gadsden Hcp over 1400m at Flemington the Danny Obrien trained Lope de Vega gelding, Remember The Name just held on to win for jockey, Noel Callow. After the race, Danny said, "she will keep going on towards the Rivette final on July 8th".

The Autumn Sun -- The talented son of Redoutes Choice remains unbeaten with a win in the group one J.J.Atkins Plate . His record is now three from three.  He was not happy in the heavy conditions but his sheer class shone through as he fought off a gallant Zousain in the final stages, to win by a head.There is a big race in the spring waiting for this colt.

Sambro -- In the Group 2 Qld Guineas the Waller/Walker combination come to the top as the Fastnet Rock gelding travelled perfectly in running and when let down by Michael he scored well. Walker was visibly distressed after the ride and was taken to hospital with dehydration. His dam is Eau De Joie who is by Encosta De Lago . I said it last week, his mares just keep producing the goods.

The August and I Am Invincible -- In the opening event at Flemington up the straight we saw a promising star keep his unbeaten record in tact. The August raced tightly up the straight with favourite, Propelle but when asked for an effort by Noel Callow. The I Am Invincible colt, burst through to score. Trainer Brent Stanley says he is looking at some spring riches for the talented colt. His dam is Acouplamas who is by Al Maher ( Dancing Show) out of the Canny Lad mare, Mahira. In the group 2 Dane Ripper at Doomben the Waller/ Mcdonald team and the mare Invincibella struck another blow for the Invincible clan and in Adelaide it was the Lloyd Kennewell, Invincible filly, Duchess Grace who won the 1000m maiden event through a great ride by Joe Bowditch.While The Big Vin also saluted in the 1200m maiden at Newcastle topping off a statewide victory march, for the breed.
 
Masculino and Smart Missile -- A strong win for the son of Smart Missile in the 2000m Henry Bolte Hcp at Flemington. It was Zac Spain's first ride for trainer Mick Price after being assigned to his stable so Zac was exstatic. He was forced to sit three wide with cover but finished strong enough to win comfortably. He is out of the Encosta De Lago mare, Special Melody. In a Newcastle maiden over 900m today we saw 2yo filly, Smart Melody win for trainer Kris Lees. She is by Smart Missile out of the Encosta mare Sweet Melody. 


Its worth mentioning the win of Double Jeopardy in the last at Flemington for the Ellerton/Zahra team. The recently gelded son of Exceed and Excel went out a huge price with Andrew Mallyon in the saddle. The breed love that Flemington straight. Multiple wins by other stallions progeny this weekend were Written Tycoon, Choisir  and Snitzel. While Galileo mares were to the forefront with Azmiyna ( The Autumn Sun) and Abscond (Invincibella) producing the goods. Dark Dream was the winner of the Group 1 Queensland Derby and is by the Red Ransom stallion All American.

Waller and the Sebring's

I would have to give this weekends stallion award to Sebring because of  the success of his sons in Sydney and his daughter Egg Tart, on the sunny coast. While in the training ranks, Chris Waller's, record prizemoney in an Australian Season is worth mentioning and how good is female Jockey, Jamie Kah, riding in Adelaide. The Sepoy filly, Anjana, is one to watch for the future. 
  • Sebring and Egg Tart -- The Sebring mare, Egg Tart scored an easy victory in the group 2 O'Shea Stakes in Qld, almost a year to the day of her last win, in last years, Qld Oaks. She has found it a struggle in the top grade as a four year old but today got her rewards for persistance. The mare was one of many winners for trainer, Chris Waller yesterday, which enabled him to break the Australian Prizemoney record for a trainer in one season. The Sebring/Waller combination came to the fore in Sydney as well when Gresham bolted in with the second race at Rosehill, ridden by Blake Shinn. This was followed by a victory to Sir Bacchus in the Octagonal Hcp, to give the combo a treble. The gelding is the product of Sebrings mating with the Encosta De Lago mare, Bacchanal Woman. The amount of winners on a saturday produced by Encosta mares is just astounding. Another one being, Epidemic who won the listed Coughlan Stks for James Cummings, he is by Lonhro out of that good producing Encosta mare, Mnemosyne. A couple of other winners at the Sunny Coast on saturday were Granny Red Shoes who won the listed Oxlade Stks for two year olds. The Not a Single Doubt, filly was ridden by veteran jockey John Lloyd for trainer Toby Edmonds. The winner of the listed Phoenix Stks for 2yos was Commander, by Pierro, out of  the More Than Ready mare, Ephemera. 
  • Anjana -- The Sepoy filly made it 3 from 3 at the Valley with an explosive performance, that had everyone talking. She was ridden by an in form Damien Lane for Darren Weir. She will now have a short break and be back searching for spring glory, in the Thousand Guineas. The grey filly was purchased for $34,000 at the Inglis Classic sale and is out of the More Than Ready mare, Further. 
  • Jamaican Rain -- A perfect ride by Brian Park on the Richard Laming trained Jamaican Rain, secured another victory for the talented mare who will now head to Queensland, for the Tatts Tiara. Brian kept her out of trouble and she did the rest. Her dam is Heriz who is by Redoutes Choice who is the half brother of  Manhattan Rain, the sire of Jamaican Rain. 
  • Jamie Kah -- It was the Jamie Kah show at Morphetville on Saturday and one of her four winners was Canford. Who she rode a treat to score, bursting through the pack for victory. He is by, no surprise, Canford Cliffs. The stallion also got a winner at Rosehill with his daughter,Princess Posh in the BM 80. Canford is out of the Encosta De Lago mare Sorenstam.
  • Bel Esprit -- The sire of Black Caviar always producers winners in the country meetings around Australia. At the Valley we saw a quinella for the breed with Spirit of Aquada winning the 3yo Vobis race, out sprinting, Bel Sonic. While 4yo Bel Esprit gelding, First Watch, was victorious at Bendigo.   
  • Interesting Winners -- Johnny Dowry by Not a Single Doubt ,won at Bendigo, over 2400m ridden by Lucinda Doodt for the Payne stable. At Kembla in the 2yo maiden it was a win to the colt from the Snowden camp,Exclusive. He is by Lonhro out of the Commands mare, Talkin About. In the following race,a class one, we saw the combination reversed with the Commands gelding, Phabeni scoring for James Cummings, his dam Rainbow is by Lonhro. Stallions with multiple winners on Saturday were Street Cry, Your Song and Foxwedge who got a treble at the Gold Coast meeting with Foxy Housewife,Crab Boy and Honor and Strength. Fastnet Rock stallion, Foxwedge, stands at Newgate Farm.
