Autumn Sun Without a Doubt

The weekend bought us some Autumn Sun and overseas success for the Australian bred horses. There are two of Danehill sons who are shining a bright light for our industry, right now. Fastnet Rock who was foaled in 2001 and the old man, Redoutes Choice a 1996 foal who with his sons Snitzel,Not A Single Doubt,Stratum, Master of Design and others are leaving winners everywhere like yesterdays group one, Singapore's Kranji Mile with Southern Legend. In Ireland it was the 27 million dollar colt,  Merchant Navy by Fastnet Rock who scored easily in the Group 2 Greenland Stakes. Their clans got plenty of winners in Australia to add to the International success.
  • Autumn Sun -- The son of Redoutes Choice kept his unbeaten record in tact, with an easy win, in the 1400m opener at Randwick. The Waller, trained two year old colt cruised to victory under jockey Brendan Avdulla and is how heading to the Group 1 J.J.Atkins in Brisbane on June 9th. He is out of the Galileo mare, Azmiyna. He looks another stallion son, in the making for the king of Australian Racing.

  • Not A Single Doubt -- I wanted to include this Redoutes son in our review today because of his constant success with winners all over Australia and a group one win in Singapore as his Hong Kong son Southern Legend, scored an easy victory, in the Kranji Mile . Touch of Mink is a three year old filly by Not a Single Doubt she was successful in race 2 at Randwick. In Adelaide, the BM70 , saw another of the breed home right on the line, with He's a Moral, scoring for the Weir /Yendal combination . The 5 year old gelding is out of the Marscay mare Highest. In the next a BM 80 we saw Gracena given a peach of a ride by Kayla Crowther. The grey Monaco Consul 4 year old mare has the Not a Single Doubt blood, through her mum, Serene Lass.
  • Lonhro and Commands -- In the Group one 1350m Kingsford Smith Cup at Doomben we finally saw the Godolphin stable, secure a victory, for Impending. The Lonhro colt grabbed, the ever consistent,' Le Romain' right on the line to put a smile on trainer, James Cummings face. The grandson of Octagonal will be retired to stud and continue the male line of the great Eight Carat.   While at Sandown we saw the Eight Carat line score again when the 4yo gelding, Peacock led the field up and put them to the sword, on straightening. He is out of Commands mare Iridescent. The Eight Carat line through Commands on the female side, shines often.
Impending retires to Darley's Northwood Stud this coming breeding season with another group 1 and
 in excess of $2.4 million.

  • High Chaparrall -- In the group one Queensland Oaks we saw a powerful finish by Youngstar,  just nailing his stablemate, Another Dollar, on the line. This High Chaparrall colt is from the Danehill mare, Star Spangled. The Waller trained and Mcevoy ridden horse continued a great record for the Sadlers Wells stallion in Australian distance races.
  • Zoustar -- This first season of starters for this stallion have been nothing short of amazing and I see the Brits were chasing plenty of his stock at the Gold Coast Weanling sales this week. The group 2 Sires at Doomben saw the less fancied of his two sons, Lean Mean Machine, get the inside passage to defeat a fighting Zousian who did a lot of work up front. It was another group victory for the Chris Waller camp.

  • Fifty Stars -- This Sea The Stars colt could be something special for the Darren Weir camp. Ridden with arrogance by Brad Rawiller at Sandown on saturday in the 1400m 3yo Vobis race. He blew his opposition away in recording his fourth victory from four starts. He now is likely to head up for the Queensland Guineas in a fortnights time. His dam is Swizzle Stick who is by Sadlers Wells so the extra trip will be a positive.

A few other interesting winners were Thorondor a impressive winning 2yo at Morphetville, who is by Fastnet Rock. Self Sense who won the Australian Hurdle. The Star Sense gelding is heading to the Brisbane Cup and could well become the new jumps superstar. Mazzuro the Rip Van Winkle gelding won the Vobis staying event at Sandown said it before and i will say it again. The breed love Sandown. While Bastia gave the breed a double for the day in the BM85 over 1600m at Randwick. Top Stallions who got two or more winners yesterday were Exceed and Excel,Sepoy,Written Tycoon and So You Think.

Fastnet Rock Blood is Comin Through

A full brother to Criterion and half to Levendi were just a couple of victors this weekend. While Exceed and Excel continued their liking for the Flemington track and there were two promising youngsters to keep your eye on, Iconoclasm and Marcel from Madrid.

  • Comin Through -- The first of the group ones, the Doomben Cup, was won by the brother of Criterion as the Chris Waller trained Comin Through wore down stablemate Egg Tart to secure victory in the 2000m race with Michael Walker in the saddle. The four year old gelding by Fastnet Rock gave the stallion his 35th Group one success. He is out of the Bite The Bullet mare, Micas Pride.

Doomben Cup Comin Through

  •  Not A Single Doubt -- A couple of other interesting winners at the Doomben carnival were Winter Bride trained by Toby Edmonds and ridden by veteran jockey Jeff Lloyd in the Group 3 QTIS 3yo plate . The filly is by Not a Single Doubt and her dam is the Perugino mare Amberino. Then there was 2yo filly from the Snowden camp, ridden by Mark Zahra called Eawase. Who in the Listed Bill Carter Stakes sprouted wings over the final 150m to defeat the Not a Single Doubt filly, Granny Red Shoes. She is by Sebring out of the Not a Single Doubt mare, Karuta Queen. The son of Redoutes Choice gets over shadowed by Snitzel but still gets his share of winners.

  • Santa Ana Lane  -- The Group one Goodwood winner Santa Ana Lane also has the Fastnet Rock connection through her dam Fast Fleet. It was a good ride with some luck attached as Ben Melham was forced to duck back to the inside and burst through late, to take out the 1200m race from the always genuine Fastnet Rock mare, Miss Rock. .The Lope De Vega gelding now has two group ones to his name. His dam Fast Fleet is lot number 1507 at the Gold Coast Broodmare Sale for Three Bridges next week.

  •    In the Group 3 National Stakes at Morphetville  we saw a talented gelding by Sepoy in Marcel From Madrid successful, wearing down Tequila Time, to win. He is a half brother to Levendi being out of Redoutes Choice, mare Lipari . He was ridden by Damian Lane and trained by Ellerton/Zara team. Simon Zara said " Marcel and runner up Aristia will both head for the paddock and be set for spring campaigns". Interesting family connection between stallions, Sepoy and I Am Invincible on their dams side is Canny Miss and Canny Lad.
At Northwood Park Stud

  • The I Am Invincible filly, She's so High stormed home to win the group 3 Proud Miss Stakes. She is out of the Exceed and Excel mare, High Achiever. While the rejuvenated Land of Plenty has finally discovered how to find the winning post as he saluted in the 1600m Group 3 R.A. Lee Stakes. The change to the Darren Weir stable has the 4yo Stratum entire, firing and was jockey Damian Lane's fourth winner of the day.
  • Boom Time --  A quick summary of  Flemington where the Flying Spur gelding Boom Time blitzed his lowly rivals over the 2000m.  While in the listed Straight Six, the 6yo gelding, First Among Equals ridden by Mick Dee for Darren Weir, scored. Take note the Exceed and Excels love the Flemington straight. Runner up Divine Quality is by Sepoy. While in the last of the day saw the highly promising colt Iconoclasm win the 1600m Vobis 3yo event, in easy fashion, after sitting wide most of the way and exploding clear to win. The Darren Weir trained Toorak Toff colt is destined for better things. His dam is the Encosta De Lago mare Gold Lottey.

Wanted and Redoutes Sons

  • English -- The Brisbane Doomben Ten Thousand which was run on Saturday saw the grand mare English for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott finally break through, for another group 1. She always gives a hundred per cent and today it was enough with Redzel setting the pace of the race.English's  jockey, Tim Clarke had her positioned to get the run on the fence and when he asked her to go she give plenty and held off the late finish, from Impending. She is one of only a few Encosta De Lago's still racing and a tilt at the 13 million Everest is on the cards. This took Encosta De Lago's progeny to 114 stakes winners with a total of 1136 individual winners.Which includes the champion filly Alinghi, the grey flash Chautauqua,Hong Kong's champ Sacred Kingdom and the promising stallion Manhattan Rain.
  • Wanted -- The Fastnet Rock, stallion had his first group one winner on the weekend with Leicester exploding away for an easy win in the SA Derby. The breed are very adaptable to most distances and conditions but with Leicester being out of the Galileo mare Maybe it points to a good staying career for this colt. I have also noticed a strong presence of wet trackers on the dam Fragmentations side with both Snippets and Plush so i would say the sting out of the ground helped Saturday as well.

  • Stratum -- Its a shame we lost this promising Redoutes Choice stallion, two years back because over the last couple of seasons he has really stamped himself on some top class horses and on Saturday Tequila Time gave him another group winner. When he dominated the Group 3 SA Sires Produce ridden by Clare Lindop who is going to retire after the Adelaide carnival. The 2yo gelding is out of the Encosta De Lago mare, El Milagro.
  • Zoustar -- The first crop stallion Zoustar continues to get group winners and in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes the Chris Waller trained colt, Zousain was given a patient ride by Keiron Mcevoy to record a good win and now a shot at the Group one J.J.Atkins is in sight next month. A race his sire was runner up in, back in 2013.
  • Scone -- On the country circuit at Scone we saw another son of  Redoutes Choice produce the winner of the Listed Denise's Joy Stakes over 1100m. In Good Time who is by Time Thief kept her record at a perfect six for six when earning her first stakes success. She was ridden by Matthew Cahill for trainer Tracey Bartley and defeated She Knows . "She's very good, I tell everyone she's our Winx," said Bartley. While Moss Trip, the most improved three-year-old filly in training, settled back at the rear of the field in the $400,000 Inglis Guineas at Scone before jockey Brenton Avdulla unleashed her wide out from the 300m and she sprinting past a quality field . The Peter Snowden trained filly is out of the Stratum mare Space Trip.

Oaks Coffey and Snitzel

  •       Snitzel and Sopressa --  The Adelaide carnival got under way on the weekend with a double to Snitzel beginning with the Group 3 McKay Stakes and victory, to the Hawkes trained, Sprightly Lass who now has a record of 6 wins of 8 starts. She sat wide all the way with Dwayne Dunn riding and was still able to forge clear. She could easily have an unbeaten record. Then in the Queen of the South Group 2, the mare French Emotion gave Snitzel 40 stakes winners for the season when she was able to get the job done again and make it two wins straight. The Group 1 2000m South Australian Oaks saw the So You Think filly, Sopressa record her first Group one and jockey Harry Coffey''s first as well. A memorable moment for the young man who suffers from cystic fibrosis. The owners Danny and Diane Molloy had given him the mount through the urgence of trainer Darren Weir and were rewarded for their faith as Sopressa sat on the speed and hung on to score for Harry.

  •         Shoals -- In the fillies and Mares Robert Sangster Stakes,Shoals stamped herself as the best three-year-old filly, in the country after Group One wins, in three states. The impressive Fastnet Rock filly jumped from the outside barrier to win in an effortless performance. This bought her prizemoney tally to over 2 million dollars. She is out of the Hussonet mare, Broken Shore.

 Shoals winning the Robert Sangster

  •         Oregons Day -- The Hollindale Stakes meeting on the Gold Coast saw the often unlucky Domesday mare, Oregans Day storm home to victory with veteran jockey Jim Byrne , in the saddle for Mick Price defeating the prolific bridesmaid, Tom Melbourne, in the main race. In the Group 3 Guineas over 1200m the Bjorn Baker trained, Corey Brown ridden, Champagne Cuddles was successful. The Not a Single Doubt filly is out of the group 1 winning mare Sky Cuddle. While Dreams Aplenty was a good winner in the listed gold Coast Cup. The four year old gelding is by Dreams Ahead from the Redoutes Choice mare Tipsy Moment. Its also worth mentioning the double by the I Am Invincible clan at Flemington before signing off this week. In the 2yo 1100m event a Mick Price trained filly, Crack the Code won and then a race later in the BM 84 over 2000m Lipstick Lover trained by Darren Weir was victorious. It just shows the versatility of the breed.

Half Brothers Reign

Lets take a look at the weekends racing here in the land of Oz. Winning isn't everything but wanting to win is and two half brothers, Redoutes Choice and Manhattan Rain progeny seem to have that in them. Whether it be their direct descendants or through sons and daughters.
At Caulfield , Gai Waterhouse  and Adrian Bott combined for the second time this week with a horse by Blue Gum Farm based stallion, Manhattan Rain to win a stakes race, with 2YO filly Let Me Sleep On It, winning the Listed Redoute's Choice Stakes over 1200m at Caulfield. While earlier this week Runaway did just that in the 2600m, St Leger at Flemington. Another great front running ride by Stevie Baster  who completed a race to race double in the next as Written Choice who is by Written Tycoon out of the Redoutes Choice mare Rate the Choice won the benchmark 70 over 1100m.

Check this guy out great value in this colt out of Snitzel's daughter Dynamic Flyer. Wished i had some cash. Looks a group one winner to me .

Encosta De Lago/Shanthas Choice             Manhattan Rain/ Dynamic Flyer
Hawkesbury  -- In the listed Hawkesbury Rush victory went to the Redoutes Choice colt, Glenall.Trainer Michael Hawkes said ''being back in familiar surroundings played a key role in Glenall’s first black type triumph after a Melbourne campaign''.“It’s just a change of environment back to Sydney, the horse has always had ability, he’s always shown that. “He’s a Redoute’s Choice so we’ve always tried to chase the black-type and the Group races with him. It was a great ride. ”Brenton took the bull by the horns and jumped him out and put him in a nice position. He helped him balance and really get the best out of him,”
The Hawkesbury Cup Group 3 was won by Kingsguard. While the Guineas was won by the Fastnet Rock gelding Sambro trained by Chris Waller out of the Encosta De Lago, mare Eau De Joie.

At Morphetville in the group 3 Breeders Stakes. The Stratum gelding, Tequila Time became the 39th stakes winner for the son of Redoutes Choice, which includes 14 black type winners since he died. His Group One victors  have been Takedown, Stratum Star and Miss Wilson, who captured the New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders Stakes earlier this month. Tequila Time is out of the Encosta De Lago mare, El Milagro. Runner up was by another of  Redoutes sons, Not a Single Doubt called Fundamentalist. Widden Stud, which stood Stratum throughout his illustrious career, will be hoping that the dual Group One winning, Stratum Star, can follow in his dads steps after joining the roster last spring and covering 116 mares. Race caller Terry McAuliffe is a member of the Beer and Skittles group which part owns the speedy youngster . Tequila Time held on gamely where it counted and “lick, sip, suck it’s Tequila Time” was Tery's call as he crossed the line.Trainer, Leon Macdonald was impressed with the performance. Macdonald has saddled up many a Group One winner in the past  Gold Guru, Rebel Raider and Umrum among them and he now has another shining star .
Steel Frost won the Listed City of Adelaide Hcp over 1400m he is by Byannbos Gift who is by Zabeel . Strange to see him performimg so well at the shorter trips. He is out of the Commands mare Horshoe. Group 3 Chairmans Stakes won by Leicester the son of Fastnet Rock stallion Wanted out of a Galileo mare. He stands at Clear Mountain Stud  and is by the Snippets mare Fragmentation.
The other listed race on the day was the Nitschke Stakes and it was won by Peaceful State. An Animal Kingdom colt trained by Darren Weir and ridden by John Allen.

Hong Kong -- Champions Day at Sha Tin  drew 48,242 race goers on Sunday and the crowd was treated to an afternoon of outstanding Group 1 action . Hong Kong’s wayward son came of age as Pakistan Star smashed his rivals in the G1 Queen Elizabeth II Cup over 2000m with a performance of superiority in  the second fastest time ever, for the race, 2m 00.21s. While the Road To Rock gelding, Beauty Generation proved his championship credentials in the Champions Mile and put himself forward for Hong Kong Horse of the Year honours  with his victory . After winning December’s Hong Kong Mile and the Queen’s Silver Jubilee Cup over 1400m in February. Road to Rock is a son of great Encosta De Lago.  Chairman’s Sprint Prize saw the John Size-trained Ivictory defy a hefty rise in class  to claim the 1200m Group 1 .
